Asger Juel Larsen is a Danish menswear designer who came out of London Fashion College. He just presented a collection for the first time in his home country at the National Museum of Denmark for Copenhagen Fashion Week…

So I went to the show:
I walk up the big red carpet to the entrance of the show and I am greeted by two massive banners with the brand logo hanging from each side of the impressive building. Once inside, a gloomy looking model looks on while holding two Rottweilers.
The show starts and in the grand venue a screen above the catwalk shows an old black and white film featuring soviet soldiers in the worst of cold weather. With Siberian-like temperature outside too, you could not help but feeling part of the scenery.
The models were well prepared for the freezing cold though: sharply tailored military coats and draping effect biker jackets scarred with a barbed wire web of zippers and metal chains. Oversized jumpers, fur hats, gloves and the combination of wool and leather. And, of course, all this infused with a healthy dose of punk attitude.

I met Asger in his studio:

SMB: Asger, my favourite pieces from your collection were the gold suit, the red long coat, the grey big lapel jacket and the harem pants … how did these items come to life?
AJL: I take from the past, I make it present, turning it into something unpredictable.
I’m taking it back to 1896, to the Russian coronation: from there comes the tailored gold suit. And from the Revolution in 1917: the coats and jackets with massive lapels, ribbons and orders. Soviet soldiers weren’t allowed to criticize Communism, instead they would tell sick jokes, so I also have a lot of those coming for print.
To make all this more fun, I mix it up with MC Hammer therefore the trousers.
There is also emptiness and loneliness in the collection like the imaginary in “The Road” with Viggo Mortensen which it had a massive effect on me.
SMB: And what about the last look of the bloody man with the chainsaw?
Freya Dalsjö and her partner in crime, Esben Weile Kjær met only six months ago on the summer festival circuit in Denmark. That is when they decided they wanted to do something together. They called on the favours from their talented friends to produce a spectacular “art meets fashion installation” inspired by a short film.
We meet in a busy bar in the hip quarters of Nørrebro. They are with a male model friend who was also a part of the off-schedule show at this year’s Copenhagen Fashion Week.
Freya Dalsjö studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, lived in Berlin and she just showed her first collection at Copenhagen Fashion Week.
Esben is a 19-year-old DJ/event maker/booker entrepreneur. He organises his own music festival and quite a few club nights around town.
The two young visionaries united forces with a bunch of their creative friends to put together a new kind of fashion show, showcasing the talents of the super young Copenhagen.
In the freezing cold CFW, this young collectives approach to fashion makes you feel warmer.
A very excited Freya tells us that the pieces are all based on a short film that three of her friends made.
The film was also a part of the show and Freya designed the clothes specifically to fit the mood of it. The result was a beautiful and strong collection on a black, white and yellow palette. Featuring leather, furry bulky monkey-like sleeves, flowy see through fabrics, feminine fitted silhouettes on the womenswear and a signature visor headband that the designer also wears herself.
The show combined art, fashion and filmmaking and for the creators it’s all about the feeling and the atmosphere. Freya: “We presented everything combined like a live installation with spot lit models stood on platforms, the film and a soundtrack – we knew from the beginning that we wanted to work with a lot of talented people who are good at what they are doing. I made the garments manipulating the fabrics and the shape and how the body moves. It’s a small menswear and womenswear collection and it’s all about the mood!”
Esben talks enthusiastically about the packed out after party at Jolene’s in the city’s meatpacking district, where all their friends and supporters came and partied hard: “I organised the event and got a lot of great DJ’s to come and play in support of the project”
When asked what is next for the young collective, Freya says: “I want to continue to create pieces and put shows together, but not with a commercial purpose. My collection is not made to be sold, I just want to make a statement.”
